Did you know: Building science has shown that having an uncovered attic fan is the equivilent to leaving your front door open all year long?
Attic Fan Covers are the single most important addition you can make to a home with an attic fan.
Measuring Instructions
1. Measure the outer perimeter of the ALUMINUM flange area of attic fan or attic stairs.
2. It is important to specify which side of the cover you would like your hinge/mount on (side A or B as shown in illustration below). Note: When determining hanging rail dimension, take into consideration that your cover will need to swing from rail a full 90 degrees to 'Open Position' without any obstruction in travel area (such as light fixture or picture on wall). See illustrations 2 and 3 below.
Our attic fan cover was cover was designed to attach directly to the ALUMINUM flange area of your cieling fan, but can easily be adapted to any opening in ceiling or wall effectively if you have a surrounding flat surface with a minimum of 1-3/8" around opening to be covered.* (1-3/8" is the flat flange area it takes to compress both vinyl seals that are splinned to the cover flange. It takes a minimum of 1" to compress the first vinyl seal from the outside flange edge of insulating cover.) Because of this, decorative routered trims will not work.
*ADAPTATIONS
IF YOUR CEILING FAN DOES NOT HAVE 1-3/8" FLAT FLANGE AREA, it is recommended that this be accomplished by using some form of shim or attaching a facing around shutter prior to measuring for cover.
IF WOOD FACING IS ATTACHED AROUND CEILING SHUTTERS, such as 1" x 4", make sure wood miters fit together air-tight and the facing seals to the ceiling are air-tight. Caulking miters and facing to ceiling can help accomplish this. Most effective installation of cover will be accomplished by measuring inner opening edges of facing and adding 4" to these dimensions to get cover size. This allows cover to be attached directly to wood facing, gives a 2" flat surface for cover to seal to and lets the screws for attaching hanging-rail and locks be far enough from wood edge so as not to split wood facing.
